The Way of St. James / The Camino de Santiago
The scallop shell is used by pilgrims as symbol of Camino de Santiago de Compostella. The shell is often gifted to or from pilgrims as a type of blessing when traveling or good luck charm. In Ireland some medieval graves have been found to have scallop markings and in Galway cathedral grounds a tomb was found with a bronze statue of St. James on a pewter scallop shell, which shows the connection between ireland and the Camino, the reason John Weldon included this design in his collection.
